The Peace Corps was established by Executive Order 10924, issued by President John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961, announced by televised broadcast March 2, 1961, and authorized by Congress on September 22, 1961, with passage of the Peace Corps Act (Public Law 87-293). Lawrence H. Fuchs was a prominent member of the faculty at Brandeis University from 1952-2002 where he served as the Meyer and Walter Jaffe Professor of American Civilization and Politics. He founded the American Studies Department in 1970 and served as the Dean of Faculty.
